Should Be Easy Enough

Today, I had an easy two-part plan:
  1. Take adorable photos of the boys for Christmas cards and blog, and
  2. Manage a dual doctor's appointment for both boys with several needles.

Patrick, what do you think? Should be easy enough, right? ... Uh, Patrick?

I mean, look! Here's Elliott the Christmas Elf!

Now, just hold still and say "chee..." Elliott? Elliott, come back here! [dash to the front room]

Patrick, my good boy! Say "cheese..." Patrick! [giggles and drunk runs away from me]

Again, here's the angelic picture in my head perfectly matching reality... as poor Elliott pleads with his brother for cooperation. (Every once in a while, he does try to help me. At least temporarily...)

And see that, you cynic you!? All I have to do is blend in and have them forget I'm there. It's like I'm on safari in my own home, just trying to have someone let me shoot them.

Dr. update:

Shots went as well as could be expected... Elliott said he wanted to go first and "be brave for Patrick," but he looked positively HORRIFIED when the flu shot went in. The look I got was, "I thought we were just pretending!! That actually HURT!!!"

Patrick (at his 18-month-appointment) weighs about a granola bar more than he did at 12 months. He's 25th percentile for weight and 50th for height. Elliott, on the other hand, nearly broke the baby scale -- but I swear I only got him on there with the doctor's permission. He weighs 39 lb., 2 oz. (and the scale tops out at 40!). For those of you marking your growth charts at home, that's 90th percentile.

Practically a Holiday

When I realized today was the first day in a week with NO PUKE (ahhhhhhhh, motherhood), I figured it must be some kind of friggin holiday. And then ... I realized ... IT WAS!

The Big Man turned one-and-a-half today!

Thank you, thank you for celebrating with no more throw up!

P.S. For a cute, no-relation-to-puke update, I'll tell you Patrick is loving his big animal picture book these days. He likes to learn what kinds of animals reside on those board-book pages, but he mostly likes to hear and imitate the sounds they make.
In that great "I'm-only-18-months-but-I'm-pretty-sure-this-is-a-really-funny-joke" kinda way, he's been barking at any and all animals, including the cartoon llama was saw on Diego today. When we react and say, "Hey! THAT's not a doggie!" he launches into fits of giggles.

A Update in Threes

For the last week in October, Pete and I happily joined his parents, sister and brother-in-law on a cruise! (Note to cruise participants: Can someone share photos? I think I took ONE.) Anyway, if you believe me without photographic evidence, we:
  • left from Miami (nearly missing the ship, thankyouverymuch!),
  • stopped at a very windy Key West (walked to the southern most point and sampled some beer),
  • drank,
  • ate,
  • went to Cozumel (all-you-can-drink beach and a great place for dinner, where I still can't believe Milton got us gringos in!),
  • drank,
  • ate,
  • kept our liquor and food down through some rough seas,
  • drank,
  • ate
  • and returned to Miami.

It was wonderful! My approaching-sainthood mother and step-dad (Nonna and PopPop to the boys) stayed with the practically independent Elliott and Patrick. (A hearty handshake and a blog post dedicated to your time ought to make us even, right, Mom? ...Mom?)

We changed our flight to get back in the nick of time for trick-or-treat. Overall, it went well. Erik and Emily tried to help, but Patrick was more content to roll around in our neighbors' yards (not kidding), while Elliott ran (and I mean RAN) from house-to-house, not really caring whether or not someone dispensed candy. It was so hectic, we didn't snap a single photo. (Still drunk from the cruise? Maybe.) In my unwavering dedication, though, I dressed the boys up November 1 and forced them to pose for some commemorative photos.

Sadly, Elliott's been suffering from maybe the most pathetic cold in the history of colds. (By the way, I now know "cold and flu season" takes on a whole new meaning when you have a kid starting school... As in "a whole friggin season of nonstop cold and flu.")

Are you SURE you can't smile?

THERE's a brave soldier!

Meanwhile, Patrick was the palest Diego on the block.

Adorable, no?

Side-by-side comparison. (Patrick is on the right.)

Speaking of Patrick, he took advantage of ridiculously warm (low 70s) weather in early November.

Heeeeeeeeyyyyyy, wait a second! This thing makes noise!

That is one proud and entertained one-and-a-half-year-old!

Elliott, still not feeling great, tried to make the most of the front yard leaf situation.

Well, maybe a LITTLE roll around would make me feel better...

Yeah, life is pret-ty good... [cough, cough]

Hey! I've got an idea! Let's see what happens with one tricycle and two boys!

Woopsie! A little off track... (Who sees this going downhill FAST?)

There, there, Patrick. Elliott's just going to sneak in behind you and sit exactly where you were sitting just seconds ago. We're cool, right? It's nice to share!

This May Take a While...

Truly. Settle in. Relax and grab a drink. Maybe a snack, too. Scully Space has been dormant for exactly a month, and there's a lot to catch up on!

First, we carved a pumpkin today. I call it "Feelings," and it's a self-portrait. (Man! Life's been hectic!)

Let's see... About 1,000 years ago (or so it seems), Elliott started school. That much you know. But then, the Bus Glorious Bus began! Here's Elliott on his first Bus Day. (Yes, he's dancing in the driveway in an effort to vent some excitement.)

And here it is! The photo that will make my cry for years and years to come! My first baby, all grown up, getting on the bus for the very first time!

Um, Elliott? Did you not get the memo? This is that bittersweet, tug-at-your-heartstrings moment for Mom. THIS is your face? Ohhhhhh-kay. Crying problem solved!

Things started great at preschool. If you don't know, Elliott's in a peer modeling program. He's one of four peers paired with children who have some minor delay. The peer models learn patience, compassion and more, while the other children benefit greatly from "normal" behaviors and language from kids like Elliott.
At any rate, Elliott started saying he didn't want to go back to school. Silly, nonsense stuff. But, a few days later, he threw an all-out fit, absolutely refusing to get on the bus. He even threw his shoe when I got it velcroed to his foot. He was SERIOUS. He backed down a little when I said I'd drive him to school, and that Patrick and I would stay with him for a while.
Long story short, Elliott was becoming obsessed with one child, who had a pretty severe case of autism. Elliott could not handle a kid whose behavior was so far from the norms he'd come to know and expect. I think he really wanted to help this child and got so frustrated that he couldn't make any progress.
Oh yeah. I said, "long story short"... Okay, here goes: We moved him. He's in the same program, better school, awesome teacher and a much more even-keel group of kids. He's thriving! He's absolutely loving gym with Mr. Brad, being a helper for Miss Lisa, singing "The Wheels on the Bus" with Miss Carolyn each morning, playing in the classroom kitchen and learning the preschool computer.
They also had the fire department come to their school to teach the little fire-starters some safety lessons. Elliott was thrilled, but sometimes, he's had just about enough of the paparazzo he calls "Mom."

Sadly, I thought it was hilarious, so I kept snapping.

"Noooooooooooooooooo!"

Patrick, oh yeah, Patrick.... Is THIS how I do it??

Oh, just one last school thing: Elliott's bringing home so much artwork! Even HE'S impressed a three-year-old pulled off such masterpieces!

Meanwhile, Patrick has had some more one-on-one time. (And, in the interest of full disclosure, more time with my neighbor, who watches him three mornings while I work...) But, here's Patrick having free reign of the park.

Too small to swing? Nah!

He's little, but he loves to throw his weight around. These things MUST be tested for tipping and flipping, right?

Finally! It's all about meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Sorry, Patrick! Family time!
We went to Circle S Farms in Grove City, and holy crap! That place puts every pumpkin patch I've ever met to shame!

Do such adorable shots need introduction?

Ah, a tractor! Now we're talkin'!

What an invention! A hay maze for the little ones! Pete thought I was nuts to let Patrick head in, but he could hardly stand back and watch Elliott and all the other kids tearing around this place!

Anyone with an older sibling will tell you, "Patrick, get used to that view. You'll be playing catch-up the rest of your life!"

When we finally had to leave the maze, I realized how futile it was to call to Patrick, gently asking and trying to entice him to make his way toward the nearest exit. It was time to call in the big guns.
Elliott! Run inside and get your brother! Try to look like the tiniest abductor authorities have ever seen. Use whatever force you deem necessary. Drag the suspect out by a limb if you need to! Okay? Okay. Go!

Oh, now see. It worked! The fun family trip ended with a hay ride. Mom had visions of a perfect shot with her two boys. Alas, she got one kid throwing hay, and the other trying to eat it. Perfect!
(If you haven't caught on to the pattern, it was navy blue sweatshirt day at Circle S Farm.)

The hay rides stopped in the middle of the pumpkin fields, so we could all pick our own. Hey, Patrick. Pick that up for me, k?

Patrick? You got this, right?

What do you MEAN it outweighs you??

On the hay ride back to the parking lot, the boys bid the pumpkin patch farewell...

...and spit over the railing to help next year's pumpkins grow even bigger.

Just kidding (I think) about that last caption. But it sort of is a plausible explanation...
So, I TOLD you that'd take a while! Now, Happy Halloween prepping!
Elliott INSISTS he dress as a pumpkin (how fitting!), while Patrick will be what every pale, white kid wants to be: Diego! (For those of you who don't regularly watch Nick Jr., Diego is a Spanish-speaking animal rescuer, who quite frankly, resembles my boys not at all. Still, Elliott likely wouldn't know what a Scarlet Macaw is without his show, so I guess we owe Diego at least one costume tribute!) Photos to come...

Lazy Livin'

Just because I haven't posted in a while, doesn't mean I'm not snappin' away. Here's a running photo illustration titled "LAZY LIVIN'."

Dad doesn't have to shave, and the boys can enjoy taking turns making Indian noises.

There's plenty of time to read the comics. (If only that dog could find another path to the front room...) You may have also noticed Patrick's little hand with a ripped corner of "Peanuts" in the foreground. Trouble brewing??

Nah. It just happens to be time for some good ole fashioned Brother Wrestling!

While Elliott gets used to his school schedule, Patrick has time to explore his future options. Here, with no encouragement, he explores sanitation and waste management.

Lazy Livin' leaves plenty of time for sports enthusiasts, including these two, following the "look tough!" photographer direction. (Obviously. What'd you think? Elliott was pooping??)

The boys thank Aunt Chris and Uncle Milton for the matching hats, but Elliott's still struggling with what facial expressions are best for tough sportsmen like those pictured here.

The aftermath of Ike (75 mph winds that left more than a million Ohioans without power for days and closed schools for most of the week) left us with one alternative: indoor play. Here the Couch Cushion Playground by Mom.

Climbing, crawling through tunnels, ...

...sophisticated (if not all that slippery) slides...

...provide hours of fun... er, um... well... In the boys' defense, Mom did think she had crafted a genius play area, one that allowed her to steal a few minutes to do work e-mails from the kitchen. Alas, someone -- clearly NOT Elliott -- had other plans for the playground.

Oh, just in case you thought you missed a growth spurt from Patrick, don't worry. He's still one-third (literally!) the size of Riley!

Still, he continues to dine heavily on high-fat, high-calorie foods, like corn, watermelon and crackers. (HOW do we have one kid who can eat me under the table and one who has next-to-no interest in food??)
Monday morning: The Bus Adventure Begins! (We lost almost a full week of school with Ike's power outages, but I JUST got off the phone with Elliott's new bus driver!!! Keep your eyes peeled for Bus 178, people!)
